Land and sea-based sculptural-typographic installation, a reworking of a 200 year-old poem (author unknown) sourced from duchas.ie – celebrating the island’s unique environment and Irish-language culture.
During my time on Oileán Chléire/ Cape Clear Island, as part of the Oileán AiR artist residency programme, I began a process of reworking this poem, hand-carving part of the text into found stone extracted from a rocky outcrop off the island. Using traditional hand letter-cutting techniques. I carved 4 lines of the poem. I intend to carve more of the poem over the winter of 2020 in order to return them to Olieán Chléire next year and present them back to the island community, reinterring them into the ground of the island at a significant location in a symbolic outdoors, Covid-safe ceremony, to be documented by photography and video.
