Belvedere

Belvedere-3

Bradford Urban Garden, Bradford, West Yorkshire.

A pavilion of lasercut trees in Bradford Urban Garden – a cinema for watching films about people’s connection with public parks.

‘Belvedere’ is a sculptural pavilion which was designed as a miniature cinema space to screen Film maker Lucy Bergman’s ‘Belvedere films’ a series of six short films that explore and celebrate the connection people have with public parks. The films are inspired by the memories and experiences of the people who use Bradford’s Parks.

‘Belvedere’ was set up as a cinema space, screening the films throughout the day and early evening during October 2010.  It was then reconfigured to act as a sheltered pavilion and centrepiece of Bradford Urban Garden – a newly-created temporary green space in the city centre.

The pavilion is made from a steel frame with the side panels and roof laser-cut from Finnish Birch Ply.  It’s design is partly inspired by children’s book illustrations and childhood memories of parks.  As part of the collaborative process, Lucy and I intended to create a hybrid cinema/ sculptural space so that viewing the films inside ‘Belvedere’ would be a unique and magical experience.

‘Belvedere’ was supported by Fabric who have developed Bradford Urban Garden, and is an additional element to Lucy’s ‘Belvedere Films’ commission as part of Beam’s ‘Arts of Place – City Park Bradford’ programme.  Six artists were commissioned to make a series of temporary multi-disciplinary artworks for City Park, Bradford’s landmark regeneration park.  For more details, see www.artsofplace.org.uk/bradford-news.
