Art-zine celebrating the celtic festival of Samhain, and its influence on the modern festival of Hallowe’en, made collaboratively by the three Oileán AiR artists, Vicky Langan, Brigid O’Dea and Noah Rose, in response to our experience of Oileán Chléire/ Cape Clear Island, during the Oileán AiR residency, September-November 2020.

Over the course of our two-month cónaitheacht ealaíontóirí ar Ghaeltacht Oileán Chléire (artist residency on Cape Clear), increasing governmental restrictions were put in place to control the spread of COVID-19. This meant that we had limited opportunities to get to know muintir an oileáin (the island community) When we found out that the national lockdown would prevent the island’s annual community Hallowe’en celebrations from going ahead, we took a break from our own projects to collaborate on this zine, in order to document & celebrate Samhain on Oileán Chléire ag an am aisteach seo (at this strange time).

Designed & published in seven days, the bilingual, full colour, 30-page zine features the island’s uncanny landscapes, the community in disguise, a hand-drawn map of mysterious Chléire place-names, curses, cures, poetry and more. Each zine comes with four unique postcards, made by us, featuring mallachtaí (curses), beannachtaí (blessings) agus leigheasanna (cures) from Oileán Chléire.

A copy of the zine was delivered to every household on Oileán Chléire (observing Covid-19 safety measures) on the morning of Hallowe’en, Saturday 31st October 2020.

Researched, written and designed by Vicky Langan, Brigid O’Dea, Noah Rose.

Míle buíochas / Many thanks:

Ruairí Ó Donnabháin, Máirtín Ó Méalóid, Séamus Ó Drisceoil, and the community of Oileán Chléire.

I’m delighted to be traveling to Cape Clear Island, County Cork, Ireland for two months for the Oileán AiR residency, from September to early November 2020.

The residency starts with the question:

‘Cad a thárlódh dá gcaithfeadh ealaíontóirí agus deantóirí am ag smaoineamh ar a gcuid oibre agus an caidreamh idir é agus an Ghaeilge i gcomhthéacs Gaeltachta?’

‘What would happen if artists, thinkers and other creators could take time to reconsider their practice and its relationship to community and the Irish language in the context of the Gaeltacht?’

The world has changed significantly since I started my PhD at Glasgow School of Art; researching the intersection between interdisciplinary sculpture, place and minority language. After months of spending more time on Zoom than I would like, I’m very excited to be traveling to the special environment of Oileán Chléire/ Cape Clear Island. As I go into the second year of my PhD, and with so much of life having moved online, this is a perfectly-timed opportunity to develop my practice-based research in a unique environment, to make new work, to take time to think, to experiment, to meet people and improve my Irish.

During my time on Oileán Chléire, I’ll be investigating the relationship of language, place and sculpture through a process of creating temporary sculptural-poetry in the landscape.

I see the whole residency as a series of interlinked and equally important creative processes: the conversations I have and the connections I make on the island whilst improving my level of Irish, the original visual research in the landscape, the experimentation with found materials, the collaborative process of identifying and translating text in Irish and English, the transformation of this text into some kind of sculptural form, and then the placing of this work in its location – in a way which is sensitive to the environment, temporary and non-destructive.

I envisage this as not just a single work but a number of connected temporal, ephemeral works spread out at different locations across the island. I’m really looking forward to spending time on the island exploring the landscape, learning the history and engaging with the contemporary culture of Oileán Chléire – through conversations, through research, and through engaging with the Irish language.

I’m very excited to be studying again in such an illustrious and dynamic Art School, with a great supervisory team, very supportive staff, great facilities and connections across other universities and research networks. As my study will be practice-based I will continue to work as an artist and will be researching my field of inquiry through my own work, in the studio and in the field.

During the first semester (until December 2019) I will be undertaking the Research Degrees Training Programme, along with this year’s cohort of PhD/ MPhil students.

The school was demolished some time ago; the intervening years having seen many changes in Ordsall – a community shaped for many years by the adjacent Salford Docks, now Salford Quays. I have been commissioned by Ordsall Community Arts to restore this beautiful work and re-site it in a new location at Primrose Hill primary school in the heart of Ordsall. The project is due for completion in early 2019 and I’ll be posting more information as the project progresses.
